Games with a Message

It’s has never been uncommon to find some serious ideological opinions within music and cinema. However you will have to look a little harder for the messages in today’s computer games. With games soon to outsell CDs and DVDs put together it might be about time they were used for a little more than entertainment.

An Italian team has decided that it’s time games weren’t simply created for profit, but to be used as an ideological medium.

Molleindustria is an Italian team of artists, designers and programmers that aims at starting a serious discussion about social and political implications of videogames.’

‘We can free videogames from the “dictatorship of entertainment”, using them instead to describe pressing social needs, and to express our feelings or ideas just as we do in other forms of art.’

They’ve already created some controversial titles such as McDonalds the Video Game, Faith Fighter, and Oiligarchy.

It’s not really something that many people have considered, but it’s worth taking note as games might be one of the best ways to communicate your message with the audience of tomorrow (and largely today).
