Spinning the Bike Trend with Rollapaluza

The other week I found myself at an event called Rollapaluza which felt a little bit like 8 mile but with Bikes, but in Bristol not Detroit. There might have been a few other differences but I’d had a few and I didn’t notice them. Basically it was held in bar, loud hip-hop was being played, and two guys or girls went one on one on a couple of bikes put on rollers. It’s a knock out competition, with the winning man and woman getting to keep one of the bikes at the end of it all. They go all around the UK and it does make a change from a normal night down the pub.

It seems bikes are cool again especially racers (obviously I just went out and bought one), a bit of olympic success, a bit of a credit crisis, and with it being cool to be green and all. The Economist reports that the Giant, the largest bike maker in the world is set to have it’s best year ever in terms of sales. Bikes have even managed to maintain their image while Borris and Cameron (did he get his back?) ride about on them.

The best bike related campaign has to the ‘take the test’ virals, but i’ve not seen many good ads and i’ve seen (and used) some awful websites, so plenty of opportunities out there.
